We had ash dust our cars days after the eruption and I lived in Gillette Wy at the time. Many sunsets that were colored by eruption for days. Then in 1987 they open the area back up to the public and over flights, so I set up my ultralight airplane at Morton Wa and flew to the top of the mt. and took a few pictures. Hope to do a 25th anniversary flight.

Nick Gustafson replied:

We had ash all the way down in San Francisco when I was a kid!

That is an excellent shot. Love the colors. I watched that explosion 31 years ago from Bremerton and visited Johnson Ridge Observatory a couple times since. Truly amazing the way Mother Nature heals herself. It's interesting that this almost looks like a photo-realistic painting in which the artist failed to complete the mountaintop. ;-)

Nick Gustafson replied:

Yeah it does look incomplete!
